Purim  2021 begin s Thursday, February 25 th .   ERICA'S RUGELACH & BAKING, CO salutes  brave Queen Esther, who thwarted evil Prime Minister Haman, in his evil machinations against the Jewish people of antiquity. At Purim, we  are blessed with a sublime pastry in the shape of a triangle --- Hamantaschen. We symbolically eat Haman's three cornered hat when we savor this exceptiona l cookie.  Even though Esther feared for her life, she stood up against Haman and told King Ahasuerus about Haman's plans to kill all the Jews in the Persian empire in a single day. Haman was hanged, and Esther's slippery  cousin, Mordechai, reformed his ways and  became a good prime minister, bringing about a new era of Jewish rights in Persia. (Interestingly,   Esther's  name is derivative of  the Persian word setareh, which  means   star , and is conveniently similar to the medium word astra, which  means  myrtl e ---  a plant with small flowers like  stars   in  the night sky .  Alternatively ,   Esther could be a derivative of the name of the Near Eastern goddess ISHTAR . Esther's given Hebrew name was Hadassah.) The spirit of Purim means having the courage to stand up to what is wrong and do what is right. Get up, Stand up, Don't give up the fight! As Women's "Her Story" Month continues, let's exca As Women's "Her Story" Month continues, let's excavate the achievements of Mary Anning from Dorset, England (1799 - 1847). A passionate fossil collector, dealer, entrepreneur and paleontologist, Mary Anning was the first woman to discover Jurassic period dinosaurs embedded in the cliffs of the Dorset coast. Among Mary's finds were the first ichthyosaur skeleton correctly identified, the first two complete plesiosaur skeletons found, and the first British discovery of a pterodactyl. Her findings confirmed the theory of pre-historic, reptilian extinction and paved the way for modern paleontology. She took great risks with her safety while excavating at the marine fossil beds in the high cliffs at Lyme Regis, and, at one point, nearly lost her life in a landslide that killed her black and white terrier, Tray. Because she was an uneducated woman, from a poor family who were non-Anglican protestants dissenters, her discoveries were usurped by male scientists many times without crediting her namesake. However, on a 1834 trip to Lyme Regis the Swiss-American scientist, Louis Agassiz, was assisted by Mary Anning and her companion, Elizabeth Philpot, and, as a token of gratitude, named two species of fossil fish after Mary and her friend --- Acrodus anningiae and Belenostomus anningiae So let's honor Mary Anning today with delectable treats from Erica's Rugelach, and think of the importance of documenting and discovering the secrets of the Earth through geology and paleontology. Erica's Rugelach & Baking, Co continues the celebration of Women's "Her Story" Month by saluting Rachel Carson, marine biologist, conservationist, activist and author of the 1962 classic "Silent Spring." Her work heralded the dangers of DDT and toxic insecticides which resulted in the carcinogenic chemical being permanently banned. The title "Silent Spring" came about as a warning that, if action was not taken, there would one day be no more birds chirping because their eggshells would thin & degrade due to DDT. She also wrote "The Sea Around Us" in 1951 an unprecedented work that celebrates the bounty and beauty of the world's oceans. Like Sylvia Earle in her childhood backyard of Dunedin, Florida, Carson was also fascinated by the tide pools she closely observed in her beloved Salt Pond Preserve in Bristol, Maine. In these tiny ecosystems they observed the profound interconnected nature of all things. Known as "Her Deepness" and "The Sturgeon General", Sylvia has sounded the lighthouse bells on the dangers of overfishing, pollution, and the need to conserve the ocean's wildlife. Sylvia was the first woman scientist-in-chief of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration of the USA and was awarded a "Hero of the Planet" title by Time Magazine. Since 1998, she has been an explorer- in- residence at National Geographic. Today, we honor Jane Jacobs, the American activist Today, we honor Jane Jacobs, the American activist, journalist, and author, who led the epic protest against the proposed "Lower Manhattan Expressway" --- a highway that would have directly cut through Greenwich Village, SoHo, and Little Italy. During the 1960's she successfully took on developer, Robert Moses, and his plans to level Washington Square Park, and thus succeeded in preserving one of the jewels in the crown of New York City. Jane Jacobs championed the importance of preserving urban neighborhoods, communities, and cultures through the retention of original architectural structures.
